DAIKARI DIGIMON

SEVENTH DIGIMON COUPLES
DAIKARI

Episode References

Episode 01: Enter Flamedramon

After finding Tai, Davis activates the Digi-Egg of Courage to save Kari from a Monochromon. After Tai gives Davis his goggles, Kari says he looks good, and Davis blushes.

Episode 03: A New Digitude

In the Digital World, Davis offers to hold Kari's hand if she is scared (dub only).

When the Digimon Emperor says that he is "the only perfect human", Davis answers with: "Oh yeah, blowhard? What do you think of Kari?" (dub only)

Episode 7: Guardian Angel

When Davis finds out that Patamon digivolves to Angemon and Gatomon digivolves to Angewomon he becomes jealous and asks Veemon if Veemon can digivolve to something with "Ange" in its name.

Episode 18: Run Yolei Run

When Izzy's mom went into Izzy's room, Davis and Kari are shown holding each other in a kind of dancing embrace.

Episode 28: The Insect Master's Trap

Davis says, "Whoever destroys the most Control Spires gets to go on a date with me! By the way, Kari's the only one eligible!" (English Dub)

Episode 45: The Dark Gate

In the original, after Davis talks to Ken about forgetting about his past. Kari mentions she feels warm, and wonders if the warmth is coming from Davis' heart.

Supreme Hurricane Touchdown

At the beginning of the movie, Kari sends the rest of the team a picture of her and T.K. in New York, in part to annoy Davis.

In the original Japanese version T.K. agrees that the picture will make Davis jealous.

In the dub version on the train to Colorado, she sends another e-mail to them: "I'm sending an e-mail to Davis and the others. "I'm sure he misses me!" This is not said in the original Japanese scene.

When Davis receives an e-mail, he's very excited to find it's from Kari.

Davis tells Willis that he is the only one allowed to kiss Kari, though she rebukes him for it. (English dub)

Digimon Adventure 02 Drama CD: Natsu e no Tobira

Kari rejects Davis's request for a date. Davis remains depressed about it, and even his sad feelings combined with the power of Natsu create a winter. (Natsu, however, is noticeably jealous of Davis's fascination with Kari.)

Digimon Adventure 02: Manga

In the manga version of 02, Kari doesn't get angry or tired of Davis as in the anime. In fact, in Volume 2, Kari winks at Davis and tells him, "That's a great plan, Davis."

Other Notes

  • In the English dub in general, Davis is depicted as having a huge crush on Kari, and is often jealous when Kari talks to other boys (especially T.K.). However, this was not always the case in the Japanese version, where his crush was a bit more toned down (instead, though Hikari seemed aware of it at times she also seemed to be a bit oblivious to it.)

Speculation

  • Davis seems to have a huge crush on Kari in the beginning of the series. However at some point he isn't as crazy about Kari letting us think that his crush on Kari isn't as big as it originally was. This could however just be a sign of him maturing. Additionally, Kari slowly begins to take note of Davis continuing to mature and takes him more seriously as a strong component of the team.
  • In the original, it is implied that Davis is more possessive of Kari as a friend more than as a romantic interest. However, he may also have a crush on her there as well, though it seemed much more toned down than what it was in the dub version.
  • Seeing as Kari was not involved in Davis's illusion inflicted by MaloMyotismon, and that Davis says that there is nothing he desires as of that point, it can be assumed he either loses his crush on Kari or never really had one in the first place. On the other hand it could just be another sign of his maturity in that he may have thought there were things more important than the crush at that time. It may particularly be because in the Japanese version the crush was a lot more toned down than in the dub, which exaggerated his crush at times.

KENYAKO DIGIMON

SIXTH DIGIMON COUPLES
KENYAKO

Evidence from Digimon Adventure 02

Episode 8: Ken's Secret

Yolei exhibits many signs of having a crush on Ken.

Notably, she is attracted to him even though he is younger than she is. In the original, Iori even notes that Miyako is never attracted to younger guys, and that she always had crushes on guys much older than she. She counters by saying her mother is three years older than her father and that a year makes no difference to her liking him. In the dub, they are the same age.

Episode 25: Spirit Needle

When Ken came to fight the Golemon together with Stingmon, Yolei realizes her prejudices towards him and apologizes for jumping to conclusions, which makes Hawkmon digivolve.

In the Japanese version, it is then she begins to call him "Ken-kun" and is the first character, and one of two characters in the whole span of the anime to call Ken by his first name, along with Daisuke (he does not begin this practice until Episode 39). All of the other children call him "Ichijouji" or "Ichijouji-kun". In Japanese culture, calling someone by their first name even if they are a friend is hugely significant.

Episode 30: Ultimate Anti-Hero

Throughout the entire episode, Yolei is the one that has the most faith that Ken will come so that Veemon and Wormmon can DNA digivolve and combat BlackWargreymon. She is the one that goes to find him, and goes as far as to slap him to make Ken realize that he and the other Digidestined are companions. Ken snaps to his senses and goes to fight as soon as Yolei does this. He is not angry at all that she slapped him, and glances at her during their flight back to the others. It is also in this episode that Ken refers to Miyako by her first name, albeit with a respectful -san suffix.

Episode 38: A Very Digi Christmas

In this episode, the first time Ken laughs out loud and appears happy is when he is laughing at something Yolei did. When the other children notice his laughter, they are all surprised but pleased. In the original, Miyako goes on to say that Ken's laugh and smile are cute.

Episode 50: A Million Points of Light

Ken and Yolei are married in the epilogue 25 years later, and have three children.

Other notes

  • Yolei has an extremely obvious crush on Ken.
  • After Ken's time as the Digimon Emperor, Yolei is found to have e-mailed Ken numerous times, asking him to help them.

Evidence outside the series

Finale Poster

Image:KenyakoPoster.jpg Ken and Yolei are interlocking arms as shown on the extract of the Finale Poster on the left.

Speculation

  • As the two are confirmed to have been married, this pairing is considered canon.

TAKARI DIGIMON

FIFTH DIGIMON COUPLE
TAKARI

Evidence from Digimon Adventure

Episode 38: Prophecy

In the original version of this episode, they complete each other's sentences in various occasions.

Episode 48: My Sister's Keeper

As Tai and Izzy are talking, Sora and T.K are watching over the sick Kari. T.K is shown with teary eyes and a way sad look while seeing how bad his friend feels. As this image is shown, Tai comments T.K is the same age as Kari. This comment is pointless unless it is a suggestion of Takari.

Tai thus trusts T.K. to take care of Kari.

Episode 49: The Crest of Light

T.K. is intrigued by Kari's light and tries to protect her.

Episode 50: Joe's Battle

In the beginning of the episodes, before the opening credits, T.K. gives a brief description of what has happened in the past few episodes. At the end of this, he says, "I'm sure glad Kari's okay now." (Dub insert)

T.K also helps Kari making the memorial for the many Numemon destroyed during the episode that she wanted, and prays for their souls along with her.

Episode 52: Piedmon's Last Jest

Sora, the last remaining "older" Digidestined, asks T.K. to protect Kari, and he again accepts. While they are climbing up the rope to escape from Piedmon, T.K. also decides that he doesn't want Kari to see him scared, and wants to look brave in front of her. When T.K. gets caught by Piedmon on the leg, Kari grabs hold on his wrist. Although he tells her to let go, Kari refuses, saying that she won't let Piedmon get him like the others. Piedmon responds by saying that they are "falling" for each other (dub insert), thus cutting the rope and causing them to fall.

Other Notes

  • When T.K. first meets Kari throughout both seasons, he starts constantly standing next to her. The importance of this is that it is a constant thing and not intermittent, implying closeness.
  • T.K often sounds very cheery when Kari is around, and always speaks to her in a sweet tone.

    Evidence from Digimon Adventure 02

    Episode 01: Enter Flamedramon

When T.K. walks into Odaiba Elementary and sees Kari again for the first time in a while, they immediately strike up conversation without awkwardness or uncomfortableness. The original dialogue even has them say "It's been a long time," and "You've gotten taller."

    Episode 03: A New Digitude

When the Digimon Emperor appears T.K. stands in front of Kari with his arm out a little. Then when the Digimon Emperor reappears with Tyrannomon T.K. has his arm out in front of Kari, protecting her.

After the kids get home Davis says he's mad at the Digimon Emperor and Kari turns to T.K. and asks him if he's going to defeat the Digimon Emperor. (Dub insert)

    Episode 07: Guardian Angel

After the team accidentally left Kari behind, Davis immediately yells at T.K. However, instead of providing the same "crush" response as Davis exhibits, T.K. admits that it is his fault and resolves to save her, together with Davis, provoking implications of a deeper closeness.

    Episode 13: His Master's Voice

Throughout the episode, T.K. displays an increasing worry for Kari. In the middle of class, he jumps out of his seat and shouts her name. T.K. is also the first to think that there might be something wrong. After class, T.K. searches all over for Kari, even looking in the girl's washroom. T.K. blames himself for Kari's disappearance.

When Kari is trapped in the Dark Ocean, she calls out for Tai, Gatomon, and T.K. to save her, notably the people she is closest to.

In the English dub of His Master's Voice, T.K. responds to Kari's worries about the Dark Ocean with "Look Kari, I care too much about you to let anyone take you without a fight!" and after he says this there is an awkward moment between the two as T.K. rushes off to class. At the end of the English version of the episode, Kari asks T.K. if he meant what he said earlier, and responds that she cares about him too.

In the Japanese version of this episode, T.K. is instead angry at her for being too dependent on Tai, and few Takari hints are given at all.

    Episode 31: Opposites Attract

Near the end of the episode when the others finally meet back up to Kari, Yolei, and Ken, T.K. turns to Kari and says "I thought I really lost you this time; I was afraid you had slipped into the other world for good." (English Dub)

    Episode 48: Oikawa's Shame

When Kari's morale drops as the children are watching the Dark Spore children gather, she turns to T.K. for comfort, which he gives her. He reminds her to do her best, and instills some optimism back in her.

    Mimi commenting on their picture.

The picture that was supposed to make Davis jealous.
    • Whenever Davis messes up T.K.'s name, Kari gets a little offended and corrects him. (English Dub)

    Evidence outside the series itself

    Movie: The Golden Digimentals

This movie formed the third part of Digimon the Movie, and was significantly edited when dubbed into English.

T.K. and Kari travel to New York "partly to visit Mimi, and partly to make Davis jealous". In the original, there is a similar scene (cut from the dub) where Mimi looks at the pictures of Hikari and Takeru; Takeru states, "Yes, Daisuke-kun will definitely be jealous when he sees these pictures."

When Kari and T.K. are in the train, going to Colorado, Kari messages Davis and this make T.K. somewhat jealous.

When Willis gives Yolei and Kari a good-bye kiss on the cheek, T.K looks very upset and jealous.

    Movie: Diaboromon Strikes Back

In the original version, Kari and T.K. enter the internet to help their older siblings, Kari looks discouraged and a troubled T.K. says "It'll be all right." Kari looks at him and smiles faintly.

    The Finale Poster

T.K. and Kari are holding hands as shown on the extract of the Finale Poster on the right.

Digimon Adventure 02 Best Partner: Takaishi Takeru - Focus

In the character song "Focus" for T.K., T.K. addresses someone (likely Kari) that he's known since he was small, and has had a desire to protect - even mentioning that "you used to cry all the time/But now you're standing in the light" (he uses the same word for "light", "hikari", as Hikari's name). He then asks if he is the focus of the person's heart.

Girls Festival Digimon: Reflection - Yagami Hikari

In the "Reflection" for Hikari, Kari addresses someone (likely T.K. and not Tai, as in the chorus she says "Your eyes were so pretty/You'd look away when I looked at you/But I could always feel your eyes on me/That's the reflection in my memories"), who had been together with her from a long ago day and protected her. There is a possibility that this song is an answer from Kari to T.K.'s question in "Focus".

    Drama CD: Christmas Fantasy

When V-mon mentions that Daisuke is making a present for Hikari, Patamon says that Takeru is making one too.

    Speculation

    • Both T.K. and Kari have a special bond together, and they generally seem to like each other.
    • Both their crests and their digimon come in a pair. Such as Angemon and Angwoman when Gatomon and Patamon digivolve. Also, their digi-eggs were right next to each other when they found them in Adventure 02. It seems that the two might have already bonded with a special bond before they even met.
    • Both were the key to saving the world when Myotismon attacked, the prophecy said 'Angels of light and hope (Kari and T.K) will shoot arrows at their loved ones (Tai and Matt).

    Other Notes

    • Takari is a common coupling in many Adventure/02 fan-fics.
    • In some fan-fics, T.K. and Kari are together because of their long relationship and closeness with each other. Many of these fics involve Davis Motomiya tragically breaking Kari's heart or ruining her life as a subconscious way of bashing the Davis & Karicoupling. These fics often end in T.K. trying to "mend" Kari's heart.
    • In the epilogue, it is not revealed who Kari and T.K Marry, so they may have a relationship, and it seems to give it away if you look closely at the FInale Poster, they're holding hands, which might lead to something.
